Dr Akiko Ohnogi

Dr. Akiko Ohnogi is an experienced play therapist who integrates play therapy in her work with a diverse clientele, spanning very young children, adolescents, and adults. Her clinical expertise lies in the treatment of children, trauma survivors, and multicultural families. As the co-founder of the Japan Association for Play Therapy (JAPT) and the International Consortium of Play Therapy Associations (IC-PTA), Dr. Ohnogi has actively contributed to the field. She has publications in both the United States and Japan and has conducted workshops internationally, including in the US, Ireland, England, Argentina, and Japan, reflecting her commitment to disseminating knowledge globally.
Beyond her clinical roles, her diverse roles encompass having been a masters-level thesis advisor, graduate-level play therapy lecturer, and school counselor. She extends her expertise to supporting survivors of natural disasters. Selected by the Association for Play Therapy in the US, Dr. Ohnogi was on a team of play therapists who provided emotional support to Sri Lankan children orphaned by the 2004 Pacific Rim earthquake and tsunami. Additionally, JAPT, under her co-leadership, has been actively assisting survivors of natural disasters in Japan since the 2011 Great East Japan earthquake-tsunami-nuclear reactor disaster.
Establishing her private practice in Tokyo in 2000, Dr. Ohnogi remains committed to advancing the field of play therapy, fostering international collaboration, and providing support to those in need.
